By Mona Lagbas

Cagayan de Oro City _A naval base is set to be established soon in Misamis Oriental.

This was announced by Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro in his short visit in the province Saturday. The proposed naval base, according to Teodoro, is to be situated along the Phividec Industrial Estate. He added that the facility will enhance the Philippine Navy's defense capabilities and will also serve as a disaster preparedness and rescue hub.

"We are optimistic that with the support of Governor Peter Unabia, this plan will push through. As to the budget for this project, Congressman Lordan Suan of Cagayan de Oro's 1st District is instrumental in making sure that this will be included in the national appropriation. Of course, the installation of this naval base will require the go-signal of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr", disclosed the defense secretary.

Teodoro said that two other naval bases will also be established, specifically in Luzon and in the Visayas areas.
