ZAMBOANGA CITY – An encounter occurred in Basilan on the afternoon of January 22, 2025, involving troops from the 101st Infantry Brigade. According to reports, while traversing from the 32nd Infantry Battalion headquarters in Barangay Tumahubong, Sumisip, Basilan, toward Barangay Lower Cabengbeng in the same municipality, soldiers came under fire from unidentified armed individuals, prompting them to retaliate.
The incident tragically resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and the wounding of twelve others. The number of enemy casualties remains unconfirmed at this time. The wounded soldiers were immediately transported to Zamboanga City for medical treatment. The identities of the deceased and injured personnel are being withheld pending notification to their next of kin. In a statement, the Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) expressed its condolences to the families and loved ones of the fallen soldiers. "We mourn the loss of our brave soldiers who gave their lives in the line of duty, working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the people of Basilan," said Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, Commander of WestMinCom."We also pray for the swift recovery of those who were injured during this attack."
WestMinCom has vowed to pursue the perpetrators of this attack and put an end to the violence that disrupts peaceful communities and endangers the lives of both soldiers and civilians. The armed forces reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding the people and the state, staying resolute in their mission to maintain peace and security in the region.
